The primary VAC program that provides short-term financial help for basic living expenses.

What It Covers

  • Rent or mortgage payments
  • Utility bills (gas, electric, water, garbage, phone, and internet)

How It Works

  1. Applicant completes an application and is scheduled for an intake interview with VAC's Social Services Aide
  2. VAC reviews:
    • Household income
    • Monthly expenses
    • Financial hardship
  3. A budget calculation (“Standard of Need”) determines eligibility
  4. If approved:
    • VAC pays vendors directly (landlord, utility company, etc.)
    • No cash is given to the applicant

Special assistance for veterans impacted by unavoidable disasters

When It Applies

Purpose

To provide short-term relief for caregivers and prevent burnout.

Who Qualifies

  • Caregivers of veterans
  • Caregivers of a veteran’s spouse (in some cases)

How It Works

  1. Caregiver applies and documents caregiving responsibilities

    • Need for temporary relief
  3. Approved services are provided for a limited period

What It May Cover

  • Temporary caregiving support
  • Respite services
