The Veterans Assistance Commission provides a range of services, including Veteran Assistance, Emergency Assistance, Disaster Assistance, and Caregiver Relief. Each request for assistance through these programs begins with the same application process outlined below.

Step 1. Gather all documents

What documents are needed to apply for financial assistance?

• Copy of Military Discharge or DD-214 
• Social Security Card for Veteran, Spouse, Children
• Illinois Photo ID card for Veteran and Spouse
• Copy of Marriage License
• Dependent children: Birth Certificates, Adoption Papers, or Guardianship Documents
• Veteran's Death Certificate (If applying as a surviving spouse)
• Household income verification for all adult members of the household (4 weeks of pay stubs)
• All current utility bills in Veteran's Name or Spouse's Name
• Proof of residence such as a full copy of lease, mortgage, etc.
• Current federal income tax return / all 1099's
• Complete current bank statements for all checking & saving accounts
• Current Social Security Statement

Step 2: Complete the Application

Scan the QR code to access and complete the Financial Assistance Application online. Ensure all required fields are filled out accurately and completely to avoid delays in processing.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Submit the completed application online. If needed, you may also print the form and submit it by mail or drop it off at the office. Be sure to include any required supporting documentation (e.g., ID, DD-214, bills, proof of income).

Step 4: Await Decision

A staff member will review your case and determine eligibility. We might reach out to you for additional documentation or to provide referrals. Final decisions may be provided the same day or after additional review, depending on your situation.
