About Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that are spread from one person to another through sexual activity (vaginal, anal, and oral sex) or sexual contact.
  • STIs are very common. People with all backgrounds and ages can get STIs. Millions of people contract STIs every year.
  • STIs may have mild or no symptoms. It is important to get tested if you are having sex.
  • STIs are preventable and treatable, and some are curable.
