What is a cottage food operation?

A cottage food operation is a business run by an individual who prepares or packages food or beverages — excluding those listed as prohibited — in a kitchen located within their primary residence, or in a properly equipped kitchen on a farm. These products may be sold directly by the owner, a family member, or an employee.

How to register as a cottage food operation in McHenry County:

Prior to operating as a cottage food operator, registration and additional documentation is required to be submitted to the Health Department.  The registration and additional documentation will be reviewed by the Department to ensure that the requirements of the Cottage Food Act (Public Act 102-0633 – SB2007) are met.  Once the review is completed a certificate will be issued with an identification registration number specific to your operation.
