Overview

The McHenry County Department of Health currently offers certified vision and hearing screening services for all interested schools, pre-schools and daycare centers.  The purpose is to identify children who may have possible hearing and vision problems and refer them for diagnosis and treatment, if necessary.  Certified screeners will gladly make arrangements to come to your facility and perform the required screenings in an efficient and professional manner. 

Vision

Screenings are performed annually for: all school age children in Kindergarten, 2nd, and 8th grades, all new/transfer students, teacher referrals, special education students, preschool children 3 years of age or older in any public or private educational program or licensed child care facility.

Hearing

Screenings are performed annually for: all school age children in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades, new/transfer students, teacher referrals, special education students, preschool children 3 years of age or older in any private or public educational program or licensed child care facility.

  • MCDH screenings do not qualify for the mandatory Kindergarten requirement. 

  • MCDH screenings are offered to all Pre-K through 12 students. 

  • MCDH does not screen adults. For more information on vision and hearing testing in adults, please refer to the low-cost vision or low-cost clinic.
