For residents whose private well casings have been submerged, drinking water could be contaminated. Use bottled water for drinking until your water has been tested. Septic systems that are underwater will not function properly and must not be used. Not only does using a submerged system further contaminate flood water, it also could create an electrical hazard if the system involves a pump or other equipment.
The McHenry County Department of Health will perform free testing on flooded private water wells for coliform bacteria as well as a nitrate screening after the flood waters have receded and the well has been thoroughly flushed and disinfected.
