Randi Freese was born into a family of first responders and law enforcement. She is a long-time resident of McHenry County, where she lives with her husband and son. Randi’s family history and strong ties to the local community motivate her every day as a prosecutor.

Randi graduated from Ball State University with a bachelor's degree before receiving her Juris Doctorate from the DePaul University College of Law. While still in law school, Randi interned in the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office. After passing the bar exam in 2010, she was hired full-time as an Assistant State’s Attorney. Randi prosecuted every type of crime during her tenure as an Assistant State’s Attorney.

She spent years as a narcotics prosecutor, handling some of the most serious drug cases in the county. Randi has sent drug dealers to prison for large scale trafficking and drug induced homicides. She was instrumental in the development of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office’s drug induced homicide task force. She also prosecuted some of the largest drug asset forfeiture cases in McHenry County history.

After her time prosecuting narcotics, Randi prosecuted many of the highest profile cases in McHenry County, including nearly all of the first-degree murders since 2017. No case had a bigger impact on Randi than the murder of 5-year-old A.J. Freund. Randi prosecuted A.J.’s parents, bringing some justice to the tragedy. However, Randi worked tirelessly to bring a greater sense of justice, and to institute change, by prosecuting former DCFS worker, Carlos Acosta, who turned a blind eye to A.J.’s abuse. In the wake of A.J.’s death, Randi has worked to implement policies that will ensure that such a tragedy never again occurs in McHenry County.

As First Assistant State’s Attorney under Patrick Kenneally, Randi oversaw the operations of the office, including the Criminal and Civil Divisions. Randi worked tirelessly to develop a Crimes Against Children Task Force aimed at preventing and prosecuting violent and sexual crimes against children. She also played a large role in the development of new policies that were necessitated by the enactment of the SAFE-T ACT.

Randi is proud to serve as the State’s Attorney of McHenry County, as she works to keep McHenry County one of the safest places to live and work in Illinois.
