FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

McHenry County State's Attorney Randi L. Freese announces that on July 16, 2026, Ladell D. Walker Sr., 48, of Elgin, Illinois, was sentenced to 16 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after being found guilty of Drug Induced Homicide, a Class X felony. The sentence was imposed by the Honorable Judge Tiffany Davis at a sentencing hearing today, following Walker's conviction by a McHenry County jury on May 7, 2026.

The evidence presented at trial established that on September 10, 2023, Walker arranged through phone calls and text messages to meet with the victim in Elgin, where he delivered narcotics containing fentanyl. Investigators utilized cell phone records, text messages, and location data to demonstrate exactly when and where Walker met with the victim to complete the drug transaction. The evidence further proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the fentanyl Walker delivered caused the victim's fatal overdose. Following a multi-day trial, the jury found Walker guilty of Drug Induced Homicide.

Judge Davis sentenced Walker to 16 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, to be followed by 18 months of Mandatory Supervised Release. Under Illinois truth-in-sentencing laws, Walker must serve 75 percent of his prison sentence.

State's Attorney Randi Freese stated:

"Every drug dealer who chooses to distribute this deadly poison accepts the risk that someone will lose their life. Be warned that if you choose to peddle your poison in our county, that no matter where you live, we will work relentlessly with our law enforcement partners to identify you, find you, and hold you responsible. I commend the investigators and prosecutors whose diligent work ensured justice for the victim and his family."

State's Attorney Freese commends the outstanding investigative efforts of the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, particularly Detective Clesceri and Deputy Singer, as well as Detective Maloney of the Crystal Lake Police Department, whose thorough investigation was instrumental in securing this conviction.

The case was successfully prosecuted by Assistant State's Attorneys Elizabeth Vonau and Joe Tarczon.
