McHenry County Department of Health to hold free July residential document shredding event
MCHENRY COUNTY, IL – The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is pleased to announce a residential recycling event, to be held on Saturday, July 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the McHenry County Administration building, located at 667 Ware Road in Woodstock. The event is available to all McHenry County residents and is held in partnership with the Paper Tiger Document Solutions, and the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County.
This event is free of charge and is available exclusively for residential documents. Commercial businesses and/or companies are not eligible to participate. All documents will be shredded in the shred truck before leaving the site.
Once the shredding truck is full, no additional documents will be accepted.
Paper Tiger Document Solutions, AAA-certified by the National Association of Information Destruction, will provide secure onsite document shredding. Documents do not need to be in a banker box, but they must not exceed bank box dimensions (approx. 13”x15”x11”). There will be a limit of four banker boxes per vehicle. To allow Paper Tiger Document Solutions and volunteers to safely access and prepare the event site, attendees are asked not to arrive before the scheduled start time.
For quicker, more seamless shredding, please remember the following tips:
- The shredder can only accept paper. No CDs or thumb drives.
- Staples and paper clips are acceptable.
- Remove binder clips, three-ring binders, and similar items before attending the event.
- Participants must take back any bags or boxes brought to the event.
The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will be accepting alkaline batteries ($1/lb), fluorescent tubes and LED bulbs ($0.50 to $1, depending on length), and textiles, including reusable and non-reusable clothing, linens, rags, towels, blankets, and shoes tied together by the laces.
The Environmental Defenders will also be accepting clean, solid Styrofoam (all colors), packing peanuts, and reusable bubble wrap. Pink and blue construction foam insulation and non-solid Styrofoam will not be accepted. The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County have re-opened the Styrofoam collection program at the Algonquin Township Road District site. Styrofoam is accepted Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, please visit mcdef.org, email the Environmental Defenders, or call (815) 338-0393.
There will be NO electronics collected at this event. The next electronics recycling event will be held on September 12 and requires preregistration, which opens July 15 at MCDH.info. Residents who cannot attend the September event, or who are unable to register before capacity is reached, may recycle electronics year-round at Elgin Recycling, 5114 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176) in Crystal Lake. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fees for televisions and monitors are the same as those charged during the county event. Residents looking to recycle oil-based or latex paint free of charge can visit PaintCare at paintcare.org to find a nearby drop-off location. Both residential and commercial paint is accepted at participating PaintCare locations.
Residents looking to recycle alkaline (AA, AAA, C, D and 9V), rechargeable and lithium batteries free of charge can visit the Battery Network at batterynetwork.org to find a participating collection site.
