Household hazardous waste collection event to be held June 6 at Hunley School District Reed Road Campus

McHenry County Department of Health, Illinois EPA to Host Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event June 6

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL – The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH), in partnership with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA), will host a free, one-day household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, June 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Huntley School District Reed Road Campus, 10910 Reed Road, Lake in the Hills. Participants must enter the site from Reed Road. The event is open to all Illinois residents and is limited to residential household hazardous waste only.

Pre-registration is required and is available on the MCDH website. Appointment slots are scheduled in 15-minute intervals, with multiple participants assigned to each time block. Residents are asked to arrive no more than 15 minutes before or after their scheduled time.

Those without internet access or who need assistance registering may call (815) 334-4585. Residents are encouraged to carpool or designate one person to drop off materials for multiple households.

MCDH, Arcwood Environmental, LLC, and the Illinois EPA reserve the right to refuse any materials suspected of being from commercial, business, or agricultural sources, or materials not accepted at the event.

Safe Transport Guidelines

For safe transport of household hazardous waste, participants should:

  • Pack items in plastic containers or lined disposable boxes to avoid spills during transport
  • Keep similar chemicals together and separate dissimilar chemicals
  • Ensure all lids are tightly sealed and containers are not leaking
  • Place waste in the trunk or as far away from passengers as possible
  • Remain in their vehicle at all times; staff will unload materials

Residents unable to attend the June 6 event can utilize permanent household hazardous waste collection facilities in northern Illinois. More information is available on the Illinois EPA website.
