BELVIDERE MAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR ARMED RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY IN HARVARD

Post Date:04/30/2026 11:59 AM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese announced that John P. Walker, 21, of Belvidere, Illinois has been sentenced to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to Residential Burglary. The sentence was imposed by the Honorable Judge Tiffany Davis on April 30, 2026.

The conviction stems from a February 12, 2025, incident in Harvard, where Walker and a co-defendant entered a home in Harvard, Illinois through the garage while the residents were away and stole items valued at more than $500. The situation escalated when the homeowners returned and encountered the suspects, who were wearing ski masks. Walker and his accomplice fled the residence while displaying a firearm. A joint investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office led to Walker’s identification. Key evidence, including cell phone analysis, confirmed his involvement. The co-assailant was also identified, and that case remains pending.

“This is the kind of crime that could happen to anyone. A homeowner’s nightmare to walk into your own home and see two masked men, one with a gun,” State’s Attorney Freese said. “We are grateful no one was physically harmed. Thanks to the swift and coordinated work of law enforcement, we were able to identify the offender, hold him accountable, and ensure he cannot put other families at risk for a long time to come.”

Freese credited Detective Stone and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division, along with Detective Flemming of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, for their work in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.

This matter was successfully prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Shelby Page.
