FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Woodstock, IL — April 2, 2026 — McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese announced that Vincenzo J. Purpura, 38, of Wonder Lake, Illinois, has been sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to Possession of Child Pornography. The sentence was imposed by the Honorable Judge Tiffany Davis on April 1, 2026.
The conviction arose from a report made by a concerned community member who, after given permission to borrow Purpura’s phone, discovered images depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor. Recognizing the seriousness of what she had seen, she promptly contacted the Crystal Lake Police Department. Responding officers launched an investigation and confirmed that the phone belonged to Purpura and contained multiple files of child sexual abuse material in its photo library.
Purpura entered a guilty plea and will serve five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Upon release, he will be subject to Mandatory Supervised Release for a period ranging from three years to natural life and will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of these offenses and our unwavering commitment to protecting children from exploitation,” said State’s Attorney Freese. “Possession of Child Pornography is a Class 2 felony in Illinois, carrying a sentencing range of two to five years in prison. In this case, we are pleased the Court imposed the maximum sentence allowed under the law, underscoring the gravity of the defendant’s conduct and the harm caused by these crimes.”
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office commends the Crystal Lake Police Department for its swift response and thorough investigation, as well as the vigilance of the community member whose actions helped bring this case to light. Officials remind the public that suspected exploitation of children can be reported to local law enforcement or through appropriate national reporting resources.
The case was successfully prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Shelby Page.
