Treasurer offers opportunity to prepay next year's taxes

Post Date:12/04/2025 1:48 PM

WOODSTOCK, Ill. – Property owners through the month of December can take advantage of the Advance Tax Program, which allows them to make a pre-payment toward next year’s property taxes.

Through Wednesday, Dec. 31, taxpayers may make a down payment on their tax bill due in 2026, Treasurer Donna Kurtz said.

“This completely voluntary program gives taxpayers the flexibility, if they so desire, to pre-pay next year’s taxes, based on their financial situations or personal objectives,” Kurtz said.

Participating property owners must fill out and sign the Advance Tax Agreement, which can be found at https://www.mchenrycountyil.gov/departments/treasurer/tax-programs-benefiting-you, and return it to the Treasurer’s Office with a check payable to the McHenry County Collector. A separate check and agreement are required for each parcel.

Payments can be made in person or mailed, and payments made by mail must be received by the Treasurer’s Office by Dec. 31 – postmarks cannot be accepted. Envelopes must be addressed to:

McHenry County Collector

2200 N. Seminary Ave.

Woodstock, IL 60098

ATTN: Karla Mejia

Outstanding tax balances must be paid by the due date, and failure to do so may result in a tax sale on your property.

While property owners may seek to pay in advance for potential tax advantages, Treasurer’s Office staff is not able to dispense tax advice or offer information regarding the benefits of making advance payments, Kurtz said – property owners should contact a tax professional for this purpose. However, pre-payment is not recommended for people who are selling their homes.

For questions regarding the Advance Tax Program, please call the Treasurer’s Office at 815-334-4260.
