MCHENRY COUNTY, IL – The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is pleased to announce a document shredding and pumpkin smash composting event for small businesses and residents of McHenry County. This event will take place at the McHenry County College Green Living Expo on November 4th.

For the morning session of document shredding, which runs from 9am to 11am, pre-registration is required. Register here.

In the afternoon, from 1pm to 3pm, there will be a document shredding truck available without the need for pre-registration. Please note that this service will continue until the truck reaches its capacity.

Participants are welcome to bring up to 10 boxes, with box dimensions not exceeding the size of a banker box (approximately 15” x 12” x 10”). Please be aware that this event is for paper documents only and we will not accept items such as hard drives or CDs. Paper must be removed from binder clips and 3-ring binders before shredding, although paper clips and staples are acceptable. The shredding will be conducted onsite in the Paper Tiger truck.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, the McHenry County Department of Health, in collaboration with MCC, University of Illinois Extension, and Heineman Middle School Environmental Club, will also be hosting a pumpkin smash composting event in McHenry County College’s parking lot. This event will run from 10am to 3pm, or until the composting container is filled.

Residential pumpkins, gourds, mums, and corn stalks will be accepted for composting. Please ensure that all non-biodegradable items used for decorating these items, such as candles, glow sticks, ribbon, googly eyes, and more, are removed before placing the fall décor in the designated dumpster. Painted pumpkins are acceptable.

The Green Living Expo will be held indoors at McHenry County College, located at 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake. This event offers a unique opportunity to connect with local green leaders, businesses, and organizations. Attendees can learn about ways to save money now and in the future through renewable energy programs. Additionally, food trucks will be present at the event, using compostable items to minimize waste.
