LORIN VOLBERDING SENTENCED TO 50 YEARS IN THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS FOR THE OFFENSE OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that 74-year-old Lorin Volberding was sentenced to 50 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of first degree murder.

On February 3, 2017 the defendant, Lorin Volberding, called his neighbor at approximately 12:30 pm and left a voicemail stating that he shot and killed his wife. The neighbor called the Spring Grove Police Department. Officers were dispatched to 10816 East Riveria Drive and after a brief stand-off made entry into the home. The police found Elizabeth Volberding’s body on the kitchen floor, deceased from a single gunshot wound to the neck. Evidence at trial established that the defendant shot his wife during a domestic dispute.

Under truth in sentencing guidelines the defendant must serve 100 percent of his sentence.

This case was investigated by the Spring Grove Police Department with the assistance of the M.I.A.T. team and prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs and Michelle Clesceri.
