ISO Grants McHenry County a Class 4 Building Code Rating

Post Date:06/02/2020 2:31 PM

WOODSTOCK, Ill. – The Insurance Services Office (ISO) recently awarded McHenry County a Building Code Effectiveness Classification of Class 4 for both residential and commercial property.

The ISO is an independent statistical, rating and advisory organization that serves the property and casualty insurance industry by collecting information and data on a community’s building code adoption and enforcement practices. The ISO analyzes each community and assigns a Building Code Effectiveness Classification from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents an exemplary classification. McHenry County’s previous evaluation was Class 9. The average community classification in the State of Illinois is Class 6.

Building codes play a major role in the economic well-being and safety of a community. Buildings constructed to meet current building codes protect the health and safety of the occupants during a disaster more effectively and are more resilient after a disaster than buildings that do not meet these standards.

According to Director of Planning and Development Dennis A. Sandquist, AICP, McHenry County’s move from Class 9 to Class 4 represents significant progress with the quality of our building permitting and code enforcement processes. This score places McHenry County well above the state average, and is a testament to the expertise and professionalism of County Building Enforcement Officer Adam Wallen and his entire staff.

The ISO program will apply credits to the participating insurers for all new construction within unincorporated McHenry County that has been issued a Certificate of Occupancy in the 2019 and forward.
