Circuit Clerk Looking to Lower No-Show Rate with Free Court Hearing Reminder Signup
WOODSTOCK, Ill. – If you have an upcoming court date in the 22nd Judicial Circuit, McHenry County offers free text and email reminders so you don’t forget.
Since going live in 2018, the service now has more than 3,700 signups, with about 200 reminder messages being sent daily. Circuit Clerk Katherine Keefe would like to see greater participation, in the hope of reducing the no-show rate for court hearings.
“We are always looking for ways to reduce our failure-to-appear rate by making people more aware of their scheduled court dates so they can avoid facing the consequences of missed court appearances,” Keefe said. “Court date reminders sent by text or email allow all parties to know their court appearance dates and make the court system run much smoother overall.”
The system sends out three messages for each court date at 6 a.m. two days prior, the day prior and the morning of the event. Each message includes the case number, as well as the time and room number of the event – the email version contains a link to the case on the circuit clerk’s Public Case Access website.
Anyone can sign up for reminders for any publicly available case that has not been impounded or sealed by a judge.
The reminder service was developed in-house by county IT staff, and did not come with any outside support cost.
