Township Dissolution Considerations Report Available Online
McHenry County staff, at the County Board’s request last year, has compiled a report detailing the legal, policy and operational issues that county government faces should it have to absorb the duties and assets of any township dissolved by voter referendum.
The report was commissioned in the wake of the passage last August of Public Act 101-0230 by the Illinois General Assembly, which allows township voters or township boards in McHenry County to submit a petition for a referendum to dissolve the township. Much of the report is germane to McHenry Township, where a dissolution referendum has been placed on the ballot for the March 17 primary.
It is important to note that the question of whether a township should dissolve is not being raised or proposed by McHenry County. Rather, it is a question brought forth by the voters or by township boards.
The report does not take a position for or against the McHenry Township referendum, or any future referendum to dissolve a township.
