LORIN VOLBERDING FOUND GUILTY OF TWO COUNTS OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that 74-year-old Lorin Volberding was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder on January 15, 2020, by the Honorable Judge Michael Coppedge.

On February 3, 2017, the defendant, Lorin Volberding, called his neighbor at approximately 12:30 pm and left a voicemail stating that he shot and killed his wife. The neighbor called the Spring Grove Police Department. Officers were dispatched to 10816 East Riveria Drive and, after a brief stand-off, made entry into the home. The police found Elizabeth Volberding’s body on the kitchen floor, deceased from a single gunshot wound. Evidence at trial established that the defendant shot his wife during a domestic dispute.

The defendant will be sentenced on March 25, 2020, at 1:30pm. Under truth in sentencing guidelines, the defendant must serve 100 percent of any sentence and the mandatory minimum sentence for first degree murder committed with a firearm is 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

This case was investigated by the Spring Grove Police Department with the assistance of the M.I.A.T. team and prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs and Michelle Clesceri.
