Battery Recycling

Post Date:01/13/2020 12:50 PM

WOODSTOCK IL – Starting December 26, 2019 through January 31, 2020 the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will be accepting single-use alkaline batteries for recycling. Battery sizes AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt from residential sources will be accepted at no cost to residents. Residents may drop off their single-use non-rechargeable batteries at the MCDH Division of Environmental Health office, 667 Ware Rd, Suite 110, Woodstock IL and the MCDH Crystal Lake Health Clinic and Animal Control offices located at 100 N Virginia St, Crystal Lake IL, during normal business hours of M-F 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. MCDH is unable to accept other types of recyclable materials or waste for this drop-off program.

All of the batteries collected during this collection event will be shipped to Battery Solutions in Wixom Michigan, a United States-based battery recycler where the batteries are separated by chemistry and recycled into materials such as zinc and manganese concentrate, steel, paper and plastic. Last year Environmental Health Staff had the opportunity to visit Battery Solutions and observe firsthand the alkaline battery recycling process. Recycling is an easy way to reduce waste from disposal in sanitary landfills, improve sustainability efforts and protect the environment.  Last year MCDH ran a similar event and collected approximately 1 ton of batteries in about 6 weeks.
