Mental Health Board supports Substance Abuse Coalition outreach to Latino Community
July 30, 2019: AmeriCorps SUD Allies services were approved by the McHenry County Mental Health Board. Communities will soon have an ally in the fight to keep drugs off the streets. That is good news as statistics of Heroin overdose continue to rise. An AmeriCorps Substance Abuse Ally, a position approved for funding by the Mental Health Board, will soon interact with an underserved population, the Latino community. “Our hope is that the AmeriCorps SUD Ally will build awareness and participation in established programs, identify resources, set up case management, and provide learning opportunities for prevention education. This Ally should also be able to identify gaps or needs within the Latino community,” according to Scott Block, Executive Director. The McHenry County Mental Health Board approved funding of $13,500 for an Ally position to be administered through the Regional Office of Education for purposes of the Substance Abuse Coalition. This action is in line with the Mental Health Board’s mission “to provide leadership to ensure the prevention and treatment of mental illness, developmental disabilities and substance abuse …”
“We are excited to expand services to this underserved population in our county” states Laura Crain, Drug Free Communities Grant Coordinator. The SAC, which will oversee the program, works to address identified substance abuse issues in the county. They work together with law enforcement, healthcare professionals, schools, businesses, media, religious organizations, volunteers, those in treatment and recovery …” The mission of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Allies is to expand resources to combat substance use disorder in Illinois communities. SUD Allies AmeriCorps members engage clients, youth, and providers through a variety of services.
