Application period open for Valley Hi surplus rebate

Post Date:06/03/2019 11:20 AM

WOODSTOCK, Ill. – McHenry County homeowners can now apply for a rebate from the Valley Hi Nursing Home fund surplus.

The online portal, which can be found on the county website at, allows homeowners to apply to recoup just under 30 percent of county government’s share of last year’s property tax bill. The application period ends July 31, and the process only takes a few minutes.

“This is another promise to taxpayers kept,” County Board Chairman Jack Franks, D-Marengo, said. “The County Board has reduced the county tax levy by more than $18 million since I took office. Now, we’re safely and responsibly rebating $15 million of Valley Hi’s ample fund reserves back to homeowners while improving and expanding Valley Hi’s services to McHenry County’s seniors.”

The County Board voted in April to rebate $15 million of Valley Hi’s surplus, which for many years has averaged about $40 million, or enough to cover almost four years of operations.

To be eligible, homeowners had to have taken the homestead exemption during the 2017 tax year for bills payable in 2018, had to have paid their taxes, and had to have occupied the house on April 16, 2019. The amount of the rebate will be calculated by a formula based on the amount the homeowner paid in taxes to county government in 2018. About 88,000 properties in McHenry County could potentially qualify. For example, a homeowner who last year paid $500 in property taxes to county government would get just under $150 back.

Qualifying homeowners can expect to receive their check in the mail in late September or early October. Unclaimed funds from the rebate will go back to Valley Hi.

Hard copies of the application are available during regular business hours at the McHenry County Treasurer’s Office, 2100 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock.
