Eat right and exercise during the Holidays

Lower your risk of developing prediabetes

Post Date:11/08/2017 9:03 AM

WOODSTOCK IL McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) reminds residents that exercising and wholesome eating during the Holidays are essential.    Not only can diet and exercise help reduce Holiday stress, but the risk of developing prediabetes is lower.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 1 in 4 four adults who is living with diabetes don’t know they have the condition.  Even more sobering are CDC statistics showing that 1/3 of all Americans have prediabetes and 90% are unaware.   Most people develop prediabetes, which often has no visible symptoms, before developing type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes means a person's blood glucose (sugar) level is higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

According to Meaghan Haak, Program Coordinator for the MCDH Community Health Program, “Having prediabetes doesn’t inevitably mean that you will develop Type 2 diabetes.  Many people can actually lower blood glucose levels to the normal range by exercising and making healthy food choices.”  According to the American Diabetes Association, research shows that you can lower your type 2 diabetes risk by 58% just by losing 7% of your body weight (or 15 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds) and exercising moderately (such as brisk walking) 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

Health screenings are often the first sign of many preventable chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes.  Did you know that McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) offers low-cost Wellness Screenings on the 1st Wednesday of each month?   The Health Department has also partnered with the Woodstock Library to offer several Wellness Screenings in January.  There is no cost for Blood Pressure, Body Composition and Heart Age screenings. Glucose and Cholesterol checks can be added for $25.  Making appointments for 1st Wednesday Wellness Screenings is as easy as going online to, clicking “Community Wellness Screening” and choosing a time slot.  You can also call 815-334-4510 to schedule your appointment.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.  Take a one-minute quiz to aassess your personal risk factors and find more information about prediabetes at .
