Lost Pets
We know that losing a pet can be traumatic. Whether you have lost a pet or found a stray, we can help reunite pets with their owners. A pet - even an indoor pet - has a better chance of being returned if they always wear a collar or an ID tag with your name, address and telephone number. Microchipping is also an excellent form of permanent identification available at McHenry County Animal Control to reunite pets with families.

Helpful Tips
- File a Lost Pet Report. Our Animal Control Officers receive calls every week from residents who have found a lost pet or stray. Stop by our Crystal Lake office to file a "lost pet" report so we will know if your pet is picked up. A picture of your pet will help us to make the proper identification.
- Search the neighborhood. Walk or drive through your neighborhood several times each day. Ask neighbors, letter carriers and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Hand out a recent photograph of your pet and your contact information if your pet is found.
- Advertise. Post notices at grocery stores, community centers, veterinary offices, traffic intersections, online at www.petfinder.org, pet supply stores and other locations. Place an ad in newspapers describing your pet.
- Pet Harbor (www.petharbor.com) is a national database which has returned many pets to their loved ones. Be sure to check it out as well.
We have also put together a list of places to search for your lost pet which may prove helpful. Please use the "contact us" link if you have additional questions.
We wish you every success in locating your Best Friend.
